It's hard to understand exactly what noises you heard, I doubt that the chain doubled on itself, there is always more than less resistance as you turn the crank - you are compressing valve springs at various times. Also if your tensioner had been removed for the measurement it might still be in an unexteneded state allowing for more slack in the chain than usual.
If you can rotate it now and the marks line up you are fine, and can proceed to replace the old chain. I didn't do the tie wrap procedure seemed like too much of a pia - instead I unbolted and removed the cams - keeping all the pieces in the same relative position for reassembly.
