Still haven't rolled in new timing chain Posted by DnstrDan [Email] (#1361) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DnstrDan) on Sat, 14 Jun 2014 23:41:25 In Reply to: Re: Timing Chain Snag - Solved?, dtechakacheaptech, Mon, 9 Jun 2014 14:41:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Another Saturday has come and gone, and I still don't have things right. In fact, I haven't even broken the old chain yet. I have left the timing chain tensioner out as per the WIS procedure. When I think that I have the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks properly indexed, I am able to turn the crankshaft through two complete revolutions but no more. It always comes to a hard stop, which to me now seems indicative of an obstructing valve. Yet as far as I can tell, there is no gap between any of the tappets and the camshaft lobes. One observation I have is that there's a significant amount of camshaft backlash and differential rotation between the exhaust side and intake side camshafts, arising from excessive slack and valve spring release energy. I spent all afternoon trying to get the timing perfect, but now I'm totally frustrated. What I want to see is two complete camshaft revolutions (i.e., four complete crankshaft revolutions) without any stoppages. I think this makes a sensible entrance criteria before breaking the old chain and rolling in a new one. What should I try next?
