The 01 aero has its problems, like the pv6 update. Without it the motor is doomed to fail as in total seizure costing the owner thousands of dollars in replacing it. Blend doors for the a.c. Are problematic because of the cars age the plastic attachment from door to r.c motor breaks leaving hot air blowing out the vents. Quite a bummer in mid summer. The 01 is equipped with a 4speed auto that uses old Dexron transmission fluid and if the owner or mechanics doing a fluid flush on the tran's accidentally puts in the new transmission fluid that the 5speed auto uses it will cook the transmission in a matter of miles.. Short miles like under 100 costing the owner thousands to get a new transmission. Not to mention the center serpentine belt pulley bearing seizing. So yeah with these issues the 01 can quickly be labeled as horrible. But if your a driver that knows what your vehicle requires the 01 can be an awesome car. Personally I drive an 01 aero as a daily driver and I choose it over all the other Saab models and wouldn't think to replace the 01 for a newer year 9-5. The 4 speed auto makes the car a bullet off the light it's the fastest 0 to 60 car I own. In a line up with the cars I own this is the poll position, if your interested in speed.

First off the light is the 01 aero only because its got the 4speed. It dose one shift 0to45mph then its 45to65mph very fast very fun.
Running close second is my 94 9000 aero 5 speed manual (human error in shifting keeps it from beating the 4speed auto)
Bringing up the rear in 3rd is the 88spg (heavily modded) doesn't turn into a bullet until 3rd gear, manual 5speed
In last place is the 2010 9-3 aero 5speed auto, its auto shifting has it shift at 25mph and then again at 40mph seems the car gets lost in its shifting.

But as for the 01 aero being the worst year ever.... I haven't noticed
