I am a fan of replacing the fuel pump before it dies. Sure, there are stories of them lasting over 200k, but I think after 100k it is a good idea to replace it. That way it can be done under your terms. I usually use the $100 insert, but the entire assembly has been so inexpensive recently that I have opted for that method. I can change one in 45 minutes with the assembly, and about 2 hours if I have to use the insert.
