I'm not sure that I would worry too much about it. When the key was left on, all kinds of circuits were energized in the car, as they would be when you attempt to start the car. As the power died away as the battery was gradually depleted, who know how the circuits or components of them responded -- whereas turning a key off an cutting the power to a fully functioning circuit like y sends a clear message to the circuit to shut down.
Its possible that some component in the relay or circuit controlling it held a small amount of charge after the battery died -- just enough to cause a weird behavior.
If its behaving normally now, with a fully functioning battery, cables and charging system, I'd move on and wait until it manifests again, if ever.
Low electrical function (whether its the battery, corroded cables, or bum alternator) seems to cause all kinds of gremlin-like behavior that goes away as soon as the power sources are remedied.
