A tip for you and all others.
In the automotive business you always use left or right as if you were in the driver seat looking forward.
The good thing with that is that it works with left or right hand drive cars instead of using passenger side or driver side as a reference or as in your case, facing backwards into the engine bay.
So if the crud and stuff is on the left side of engine I would suspect the lower radiator hose housing and pipes or several of the other hoses and connections in that very area dribbling forward following the edge of cylinder head gasket to the front of the engine.
When I go in and do an oil cooler, I always remove the radiator hose housing and reseal it with new o-ring and that Nissan Silicone I use. I also had one car where the brass tube that is inserted into the aluminum housing was loose and leaking.
