I'd second the LH bits. Sometimes they snag the stud and it backs right out. Also when you're first starting the hole you can use the center punch to finesse the center if you don't go too deep right off. Time spent at the beginning getting it right is definitely worth it. After stepping up drill sizes you can follow up with a tap once you're at the minor diameter of the threads.
