The coolant gauge in the MIU for T7 vehicles has a large dead spot built into the center of the gauge for normal temperature fluxuations (unless someone has removed the buffer using a T2).
If your seeing temps creep up beyond the middle of the gauge theres probably another issue such as an inop cooling fan, low speed cooling fan circuit inop or a partially stuck thermostat. I never see any temp problems with customers vehicles here in the hot Florida summer heat unless there is a fan or thermostat fault.
A lot more goes into proper cooling for a radiator than solely core thickness. Cooling tube diameter, flow rate and other hydro thermal properties come into play. Ie: removing a thermostat completely will actually cause a vehicle to run warmer than having one installed as the cooling system flow rate is increased and coolant does not spend enough time passing through the radiator in order to cool. More than I know or care to mess with.
