Whoah, you get a great big "attaboy" for that one! I am facing the same problem, only my symptom is near-immediate loss of boost pressure after the engine stops. So far it works fine when the engine is running, but it is clearly losing vacuum. I have already replaced the hard plastic line and rubbery gasket. That stopped the honking noise that happened when I let up the brake pedal, but didn't help the vacuum loss.

The replacement booster is now in a box trundling it's way from eEuroparts.

Only one very small nit to pick in your fine description: The WIS requires removing the brake fluid reservoir only if the master cylinder is also being replaced. But it does require draining the fluid and unbolting the brake lines, which I agree is a pain.
