its true, there is a bit of a trick to it. I used two zip ties .. one to hold the ball joint to the socket, and the other to hold the first zip tie in place. Without that second zip tie the first would fall off as you row the shifter back and forth.
Ill try to take a pic, but I think an appropriate zip tie arrangement will be obvious if your linkage is broken. (and I think I've proven that "any idiot" can figure it out :-) )
