Rough idle caused by A/C?

2003 9-5 2.3L Linear, auto, stock... when cold it has a rough idle, to the point it will even die once you put it into gear if you don't give a minute or two to warm up. Rough idle continues the rest of the driving time, just won't die on you. While sitting at stoplights I just put it into neutral and it calm downs enough to not embarrass me. I've been putting up with this for a few 6 months, motor mounts are fine, did a tune up, switched DI's, checked all vacuum hoses, replaced TB (all these came up as issues on CL codes).. but the rough idle continued.... then....
One day, right after I starting it, I pushed the OFF button on the A/C... idle smoothed out and ran perfectly smooth and quiet, regardless of what gear I was in. And thats the whole story. Is the compressor dragging the motor down at low rpm, or is it an idler... or some other part I need to check?
I had actually decided to sell it and concentrate on my other two 9-5's (aeros), but this is nicely optioned linear that has never broken down and looks great (merlot with aero suspension).
