After bleeding and checking everything again ( including wedging the brake pedal for 20 minutes to see if it would sink to the floor or allow a wheel to turn) I googled "soft pedal akebono" and got hits from BMW, Accord, and Jag forums describing the exact symptoms I've been having.
I've got close to 1000 miles on these pads. I don't usually bother with aggressively bedding in new pads but I went out and did. The car stops very well but I just think the pedal feel is too soft. Bedding in improved things somewhat.
I got the pads as part of a kit from eeuro (who BTW got some good lap times with their 900 at Halloween Hooptiefest at NHMS).
