I've taken many on the roof rack of my c900's... I just sandwich them in 2x lumber for structural support and choose a dry, ideally not too windy day.
I doubt you can fit a 4x8 sheet in the wagon. Not sure on the width, but length will for sure be an issue because the sheet is not narrow enough to allow you to fold up the front passenger seat. You would need the tailgate open during the drive. Other than that, measure the diagonal - it might fit that way, but you may end up with a mess in the car also. If you have roof racks (and some lumber) I'd go that route.
