2001 2.3 LPT : dying turbo. What to install ? Posted by magalar [Email] (#1325) [Profile/Gallery] (more from magalar) on Mon, 1 Dec 2014 18:47:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi there,
My ex wagon, a 2001 Linear with the 185 hp 2.3, is drinking a bit too much oil. Carmine, Montreal's best Saab indie, diagnosed a dying turbo. This unit was installed under warranty around 30k miles when a dead DIC torched the turbo and the catalytic converter. So it has now around 100k miles.
Note that this car had the latest (6th iteration?) oil vapour recovery mod done by the dealer in 2010 to cure high oil consumption. It was never as tight as a new Honda, but 1 liter per 5000 miles was its normal thirst.
Now, my question is : what to install ?
Carmine propose a rebuilt or used Mitsubishi for around 500$ plus install. Or a new unit for 1000$.
I can find new generic chinese turbos for 300$ including shipping on ebay. Type 55560913 and you'll see plenty.
The car is still very nice, no rust or cracked headlight or missing trim. I took car of that before the sale.
The new owner, which is a neighbor, spends what's needed to keep it running. But this year he spent some big money for a new clutch, a new exhaust, new tires and now that turbo.
What would you suggest ?
