yeah, I think the pre-2002 cars look the best, but 2004+ have better reliability, so I went with a 2004. All are dirt cheap now. Someone sold a nice looking 2005 wagon for $1000 locally recently. Darn I should have jumped on it1
Anyway, yeah, you will find people here are more fussy and know the ins and outs and it may sound depressing. Don't worry, they are great cars, but you should know the ins and outs too. No good sticking your head in the sand and buying some other brand because you don't know the common problems with that car - all cars have problems, it's a matter of understanding what is most likely to come up and addressing it in advance.
If you can get records, that really helps. Short oil changes (5k) with full synthetic 0W40 are really important and pcv#6 (check date that was done if you can). Other than that, the common issues are pretty much normal stuff that's easy to manage - shocks, cooling system, DIC, etc. If you can DIY, it doesn't hurt to buy spares in advance.
