I have a 2003 and I've always liked the 2000 and 2001. I think the interiors are a little more premium. Any well maintained 9-5 will run a long time. My mechanic's '99 has 255K on it and it's very tight, smooth and fun to drive. He maintains it. Resale is very low on 9-5s now so you can get a great deal, but you have to think of it this way: there's no free lunch, even if the lunch is Swedish.
These cars require maintenance. And if you keep up with the routine stuff, you'll have a fun, safe car for many years at a low price. But if you pay, say, $1500 - $2500 for a 2001, you should plan on spending up to $2000 to set everything right. Drop the pan and check for sludge; bushings, CPS, coolant bypass valve, DIC....sooner or later you'll need to do these things. Might as well do them at the start and get the full enjoyment of the car. If your total investment is then $4000 or even more, you'll have a fantastic car for a long, long time.
The mistake people make is buying a premium European car cheap and assuming it will be great with no attention.
