Thanks for your input. I've owned saabs since 1979, and well aware that they are, shall we say, idiosyncratic? and yes, expensive to maintain if you don't know how or have interest in DYI. However, they are fun to drive, and, I believe (much?) safer in an accident than the average car-which is my main concern. Personally, I will spend to gas to drive something more massive but, I believe the saab is the best of both worlds - safe, economical to drive (fuel wise). Suggesting to give him the 2004 and get an aero (or get him an aero) does not address my question nor it addressing the weakness in the 'solution'....high mileage. I believe, that if I look enough, I can find a lower mileage 9-5, presumably newer MY than 2004. So the question is, in the last remaining years of saab (2005-2012) what MY 9-5 had the best reliability/lower mechanical issues - for example, the 2003 has the oil sump/sludge problem - fixed in 2004, so I want to know if there are any of those types of issues with MY > 2004.
Yes, I am considering Volvos, and looked at Hondas, but I don't believe the hondas crash results are as good as saabs or volvos...
