The lights you are seeing when you turn the key on and crank are normal. They come on every time you attempt to start the car, and when the engine starts, they go out - assuming that there are no issues with the underlying systems. So, unless they are staying on after you successfully start the car, or come on while the engine is running, the probably aren't telling you anything.

Mark, Larry and Paul all raise possible issues. A fuel pump sporadically misbehaving could be a culprit, as can the CPS (especially suspect if your no start conditions occur when the engine is hot, and remedy after it cools for a bit -- classic failure signs. Less likely if these are cold starts when the failure is occurring). Finally, the battery (or as we noted in prior posts -- cables) can also cause screwy problems and even long cranks before starting.

It may be more than one issue -- the long cranks when you attempt to start may be taking a toll on the battery, especially if it is older.
