I didn't get an alternator light on my wife's '03 9-5 (last summer) OR my daughter's '00 9-3 (at Christmas) when the alternators went south.
On my wife's, the Alt light didn't come on until *after* a new battery was installed. The old batt was 4 years old and didn't seem to be holding a charge, so replacing it was going to happen anyway, so no biggie.
On my daughter's car the battery--of uncertain age-- was not holding a charge. No Alt light. She put in a new battery but forgot to ask the parts place to do a charging system check. And the new batt died about 2 weeks later. STILL no alt light. Needed a new alternator.
So maybe we bought batts when we didn't absolutely need them, but better to have this stuff be a known quantity. Been a cold winter and I'd rather not get the phone call that the car won't start.
Still, makes you wonder what the hell the Alt light is for
