Since he is the one that actually is looking at the car and we are only giving our opinions based on what you wrote, he might be right.
Many things are to be considered with a diagnose like that, none of what we can offer.
Since you have changed the oil religiously every 5K miles for the last 53K miles, you must have a pretty good picture of how much oil the engine consumes between oil changes.
If you had to add several quarts between every 5K change, that's a good picture something is going on.
If you didn't have to add any oil and it was only 0.5 to 1 q low after 5K, that's a fairly healthy engine, especially if synthetic was used.
If the black oil dipstick tube is always wet and oily even after the #6 PCV update, that's a pretty good evidence that something is going on inside the engine overpressure the crank case.
