Sweden was fantastic! Amazingly, work settled down a bit as I'm between projects rights now, so I didn't miss much while I was away and didn't have a mound of work for my return!
My good friend Daryle and I met in Newark and flew SAS direct to Oslo, then took the NSB train straight to Trollhattan. Oh my god, the SCENERY! Greenest grass and bluest skies I have ever seen in my life. No haze in the sky whatsoever.
On Saturday, NEVS had a few of their new 2014 9-3's shuttling people between the Saab Car Museum and the R&D/Factory part of town, about a ten minute drive maybe. They provided a tour of some of the R&D labs across the street from the factory. Unlike some people, I respected the request that we don't take photos. One of the rooms had a couple giant erector sets with the whole electronic systems of the cars strung out on them. This way they could test all electronic functionality outside of the actual car (cough, one of the sets had a "9-3 PHOENIX" label on it with lots of familiar components and switchgear to the NG9-5). Then we saw where they tune the harmonics and the sound-insulated rooms, as well as a car on the "shake table" that simulate driving over some pretty rough roads for 8 days straight; each wheel is on its own pneumatic piston.
We then waited outside in line for a bit to be taken around the Saab test track in one of the NEVS 9-3's. In the middle they have different road surfaces like brick, cobblestone, etc., as well as two different driveway ramp pitches to test bumper clearances (two tests they forgot to perform on the Turbo-X I guess). Our driver also pointed out a little mini test track at the exit of the factory, which every Saab coming off the production line went over to check for rattles and squeaks. Cool to imagine three of my cars each driving down that track at some point.
Long story short, the weather was great, food was delicious, everyone was very friendly and spoke English fluently. We stayed at the Scandic Swania right on the canal in Trollhattan, which was beautiful, even for a mostly manufacturing-based town/city. The late sunsets (11:30pm) and early sunrises took some getting used to, and they don't sell Tylenol PM over there, or anything similar to it.
Here are some pictures, hopefully the link works:
