Disappearing coolant leak Posted by pme [Email] (#1496) [Profile/Gallery] (more from pme) on Sun, 12 Jul 2015 06:00:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi all,
2003 9-5 Arc V6. 242k miles
I've been monitoring a slow coolant leak over the past couple of weeks, adding about an inch of coolant a week. Best I could find is some weeping (or an optical illusion) on the bypass valve by the firewall. Until yesterday.
Topped up the coolant and went out to do errands. Drove about 1/2 hour on highway, parked, shopped for an hour and returned to car. Started it up, no messages on SiD. 5 minutes later got the "Add Coolant" message. Pulled over and checked.
Coolant was nearly empty, and it looked like the bypass valve was dripping onto the motor mount below. Jug was not holding pressure, I topped it up with water just to get home, cranked the heat up to high to close the valve and got myself home.
So, here's the rub. Haven't been able to replicate the issue since. I will have my Indy replace the valve preemptively, but would love for him to see it failing as it would be under a warranty (we replaced it in February when messing with my no heat issues).
Any bright ideas? Has anyone seen an instance where opening and closing the valve at least temporarily cured the leak?
Thanks for any thoughts.
