the first time because it was a common complaint, although a lot of the so-called start-up smoke has been confused with oil smoke. These cars will put off a fuel 'vapor' that resembles oil smoke, but if you'll notice, the smell is of fuel not oil. It is not burned fuel that is being released, but an unburned fuel vapor, this is why the smoke is not black.
I would imagine that Saab, after receiving all of these turbos back for warranty part's inspection, noticed that there were only a small percentage of them that actually had seal problems.
Check the smell. You'll recognize the smell of burning oil, fuel will have a sweeter smell. Saab's are not the only cars that do this, it is very common in Porsches.
Keep me posted.
Cheers,
Brian.
