The secret is seasonal tire changes in the Rust Belt Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Tue, 18 Aug 2015 09:51:04 In Reply to: How to prevent 'welding' of rear wheels onto hubs?, three_jeeps, Mon, 17 Aug 2015 18:55:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Many of use snow country/salted road owners change our wheels twice each year going from Summer to Winter tires. Not too much chance for the rust welding of hubs and like the others I use a thin smear of anti-sieze on my 9-5 too.
On the other hand, my Viggen has never been driven in the winter by any of its owners. When I went to change the front rotors last spring I had to spend 3 hours with a heavy ball peen hammer beating the old rotors off the hubs. All because of rust. I also had a challenge removing the 16-inch SE wheels off the rear axle this Spring when switching the car to 17-inch wheels. The Michelin tires were May 2009 vintage so they had been on the car for about 6 years.
The rear rotors look even more rusted to the hubs than the fronts did last year. Ugh!
