Aftermarket radio: Line-Level vs Pre-Amp to stock amp

A few threads down Jeremy claims to have used the line-level speaker outputs of his aftermarket radio directly to the stock amplifier.
Has anybody else done this?
That thread began with a question about the GM/bowtie radio in a 2007. Jeremy didn't say (or at least hasn't yet said) what year his is, but I wouldn't expect that to matter.
In a home stereo, the low-level or pre-amp outputs to the amplifier are constant and the volume change occurs at the amp. Car radios must be different because I didn't think they include some type of control wire to an amp, the volume control must occur with the pre-amp output.
thanks
Ed
