Despite all the claims about what WD40 is good for, I have never found it adequate for any lubrication job. It is a light viscosity 'lubricant' that for me, doesn't do the lubrication job well enough despite the many claims about how well it works. Even though the company claims there is a number of 'secret' lubricants, I've never seen it perform well. Depending on the application, I use: graphite oil, a 'light' machine oil, silicon spray lube, a penetrating oil, or a heavier weight lube oil.
It was developed to coat rocket fuel tanks to prevent corrosion. It is claimed to have water displacement capability.....To me, most lubricating liquids need a high sheer strength characteristic to lubricate...sheer strength is not required for meeting the requirement of having something stick to a surface to prevent rust.
IMO, using it for a lubricant is a misapplication of the product.
YMMV
