Our '04 Aero Sportkombi just did some very bizarre stuff today. My wife started it and the lights in the dash did NOT come on - none of them! It also felt like the car popped out of gear when going into reverse (Auto 5 speed). Shut the car off, cycled the key and the car starts. This time the dash lights come up but so does the CEL.

I check the codes: P1662, P1625, and P1623. All point to low voltage and a lack of bus data from the TCM - most likely from an overly long period of low voltage.

I check the battery and it's resting voltage is 12.7 or so. The voltage with the car running is 14.2 VDC. I use my BA9 Battery Tester and it shows the "State of Health" of the battery is 80%.

My wife cranks the car with the BA9 in place and it barely turns over but won't start. The battery appears to be good, but I believe it will fail a load test as it won't start the car. The voltage after attempting to start the car is just 8.9 VDC. My assessment is the battery is toast - and I just replaced it in November of 2014. I hook up the battery from our Porsche 944 and the Saab starts on the third crank. Dash lights are normal and there's no CEL.

This is my second Duralast and I think my last. The previous owner replaced the battery at 80,000 miles in January 2010. I did it again in August of 2012 at 116,000 miles, and again in November of 2014 at 144,000 miles, and now again at 153,000 miles (ten months and 9,000 miles). My Duralast warranties are up so now I'm back to full price. I think I'll try Advance.

Any comments on batteries from Advance? How about Interstate or Sears?

Thanks.
