The backs fold flat with the lip of the rear bulkhead, but an inch or so higher then the trunk floor. I have carried a lot of lumber and bagged lawn care products in my 9-5s that way.
Works well for those of us with shorter legs. Tall drivers, or those who drive with the seat far to the rear, will find the fold forward seat bottoms won't stay in the forward position.
