First, I would try the bimmer forums etc to get a wide range of opinions but I personally went with Akenbono pads and zinc coated Zimmermann smooth rotors. The Akenbono don't dust up like many pads which I deplore and the Zimmermann are attractively priced and great for rust-belt cars. With Akenbono, I have to press a bit harder on initial hard braking but I find them quite linear to brake pedal effort with no fading. One of the key points with Akenbono is to follow their bedding in process - choose your favourite language included with the pads!(When was the last time you heard of a mechanic telling a soccer mom how to bed-in her new pads with a rigorous multi-stop process that takes an hour on a high speed deserted straight highway). I used quiet country roads since you can't do the bed in on normal highways and bi-ways or you will be lynched or pulled over by the Po-lice. Post break-in, they are smooth as silk, no pulling to a side, shudder, vibration or squeak. With Akenbono, I preferred to go with the devil I know rather than one I don't due to my lack of a world class track and laboratory in my backyard. My combination is not suitable for sporting enthusiasts that desire a high level of initial grab. I definitely concur with the gentleman's comment that when brakes aren't working as they should, they are end-of-life no matter how much pad or rotor are left. It's their life or yours!
