Solved P1181 (it was the upper dipstick O-ring) Posted by Mark in Marine [Email] (#1837) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mark in Marine) on Sun, 13 Dec 2015 18:18:37 In Reply to: Re: Help on P1181 that has progressed to rough idle & P0300, Mike Craven, Sat, 12 Dec 2015 17:14:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This afternoon I found my two culprits:
Things got worse instead of better when I replaced all the PCV hoses because I knocked loose a splice in the Evap hose out the back of the throttle body. Is there supposed to be a splice of hard plastic there to join the Evap hose into a short rubber tube of the same outer diameter that then joins to the TB? I suspect this might have been a previous owner's non-standard repair.
The intermittent P1181 code was almost certainly the upper oil dipstick O-ring. When I unscrewed the oil dipstick plastic adapter I could rattle the plastic inside the metal tube - no friction at all to pull it out. O-ring was so brittle that it fell apart when I removed it. I pulled the dipstick tube to check the bottom O-ring, but it was fine. With a new O-ring all is nice and snug and the car is idling great with no codes.
Thanks for the encouragement, Mike !
