That's the transmission going into limp-home mode. My 2004 Aero is suffering from that right now (205 K miles), and I've lived with it for about a year or so. Basically the transmission stays in 5th gear, unless you move the gearbox lever to L, then it shifts and stays in 1st gear. When it happens in my car, I pull over to the side of the road, turn the car off, the restart it and the the transmission will be fine. I can't see why the transmission fluid would spray out unless the transmission vent hose is kinked or it's overfilled.
You can try changing out the transmission fluid (search the board for the triple change technique). In my car it made a world of difference but didn't fix the root problem, and it still throws the transmission (and engine) check lights. The cure seems to be a new valve body ($$$) or a new transmission ($$$$); I can't see spending that much on a older car that has other issues waiting to happen.
