2006 9-5 automatic with 97k. In the last two months, I have had two instances of the CEL coming on while going uphill, at some elevation (3-5k feet), under load -- typically around 60-70mph, both times when demanding power but not quite pushing enough for a downshift.
The first time, the CEL came on steady and gave a P1300 code, no others--I gather this is a non-specific catalyst-damaging misfire. I cleared it, and didn't come back for perhaps 500 miles. The second time--yesterday--under very similar circumstances, the CEL came on flashing for just a few seconds, I let up slightly and it went away. With no other symptoms and no more flashing, I carried on, since we were miles from ... anything ... including cell service. I haven't had a chance to see if there are codes stored (since I am in the very remote, but still connected, Yosemite NP), but the CEL is off.
The car seemed to be running just fine both times this happened. I will note that I have a separate instance when driving along at similar speed and asking to accelerate, the car doesn't downshift (since I'm not pushing hard enough on the accelerator) but gives a sort of "uneven" power response (almost like it is hesitating, but not a clear cutting out or shuddering). Turbo gauge and tach were behaving normally, though (no jumping around).
From searching the BB, I see these symptoms could indicate a lot of things, but often are due to DIC or spark plug issues. The car is new to me since about 93k, I have maintenance records revealing:
- Car has had TWO new DIC's in the last several years. My recollection is that the first one failed, and the second one started throwing codes, so the PO had it replaced; I have it in the back for an emergency. I haven't checked yet to see if it is an Saab original DI.
- The CPS was replaced approx. 6-7 months ago.
Otherwise, I believe the car has an original fuel pump, not aware of any throttle body cleaning/replacement, and not sure when the spark plugs were last replaced, though the PO was good about maintenance and had a Saab indy.
The car is due soon for an oil change -- I will tell my indy about all this. However, I wondered if anyone had any ideas, words of wisdom or things I should include in my description of the problem to him?
TIA
Tim B.
