I use some Black RTV sealant , especially on the lower areas , it does require a bit of cleaning of the surfaces . I also try to let it set up overnight if possible . Hence the name RTV , which stands for "Room Temperature Vulcanization " Stay away from the fancy ultrablue stuff , it smells horrible if any oozes to the exhaust manifold .

On the v6 and others I use a dab of vaseline on the o-rings that fit around the cover bolts . , it keeps them from falling out .
Another common mistake is people over tighten the valve cover bolts . Consistency is the best .
Premium gaskets only ....stay away from the cheap ones !
