How to check B308/V6 for Timing Belt Failure?

Hi folks,
After my 9000 had to go due to excessive rust (for 500$ on the side of the road, ran perfectly...), I purchased a 2006 9-5 which has been more or less problem free so far. Tires are expensive and I needed summer tires and wanted a new set of rims for the car. Anyway, I bought 3 cars yesterday for $50 a piece: an 87 900T, a 99 9-5 (V6) and a 94 900 (V6). The 87 900 actually runs but is rusted to shreds.
My question is: How can I check to see if the B308 Engines are shot in these two V6 cars? The 9-5 is somewhat dismanted on top and I don't have the key for the 900... Is there a simple test? IF the engines are good, the cars might be work fixing up...
If there ISN'T an easy check, what do your recommend? Both cars are solid and COULD be fixed up.
Thanks.
David
