Does "Check Engine" light go out after gas cap tight?

My first '01 4-cyl. quirk:
After noticing my gas cap was not completely tight (yes, I know it's supposed to be "3 clicks"), the engine light illuminated. Unfortunately, the light is staying on after securing the cap and restarting 3 times, with short drives in between.
Does this sound like a coincidence? All other gauges and performance are normal, plus the SID shows no faults. Is a Tech II needed to extinguish the engine light after a measly loose gas cap? Is there a trick not in the manual that resets it?
Thanks,
-John W.
