Wow--thanks for the barrage of answers so quickly. I'll be sure to post the results after I take another "trip" or two.
At least I've read my owner's manual and have kept alert on this list over the past couple of weeks. I've heard of at least one unlucky VW owner who, after having the same loose gas cap, never made the association to the check engine lamp but did pay for a service appointment.
