Though I have never seen a middle idler being fixed, I wish that Saab and GM could have produced precision engines enough that they, like all others car makers, would have been able to use fixed idlers in both positions and not mess around with this crap.
They did however come out from factory with a fixed lower idler in 02 but when you bought the new one from Saab, that one was adjustable too so it seems like they didn't favor the fixed one for replacement.
1/16" can't be more than a 1/4 of a tooth so I think you were trying to be too perfect. So if you split the difference between the front and rear set of camshafts, it is almost nothing.
