beating rust Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Wed, 20 Jul 2016 06:22:54 In Reply to: Re: OK WELL PUT, alan, Tue, 19 Jul 2016 20:30:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If you want to get more years out of your car, I can not emphasize enough the importance of oil spraying it regularly (in Canada, there are many options, eg Krown or Rust Check are excellent - can google these). You may be able to get this or similar in the USA also, or visit us up here and get it done en route! I guarantee we have at least as much salt as you in my area, and my 2004 9-5 is my newest car, and feels pretty much brand new still - the only little bits of rust from the previous owner (dog leg) were easy to repair. I also have a 1989 c900 and a 1993 c900, and the 1989 is starting to get not great wrt rust, but is still perfect wherever the paint is unmarred and the oil spray went, which is most of the car. Getting parts, and repairing that car is easy and cheap (cheaper than for 9-5 actually).
I get it that not everyone can do their own mechanical work. It definitely helps if you are keeping old cars, but not essential if you have a good indy. That said, they do age, and eventually, unless you are a restoration mechanic, there will probably come a time to let go.
I personally would consider Volvo as a replacement to the 9-5 along with a few other vehicles out there. Nothing will be a drop in replacement, but there is at least some commonality in purpose and spirit from Volvo. The Germans also. I'm inclined to hold on to ours as long as I can, and certainly until new propulsion technologies become more entrenched in the marketplace.
