I coated O-rings with Permatex Super Blue the last couple of times just because of similar concerns: 1) possible pitting / roughness on pump, pipe, and block. and 2) block O-ring losing its elasticity over time and producing a block-to-pipe leak. Seems to be working fine on those two cars after a year-and-a-half.
On a different car I used a Viton O-ring on the block-to-pipe connection, but I had to sand it down to make it fit. That car has also been okay for 46K miles and about 4.5 years. For what it's worth, I tried a fluorsilicone O-ring from McMaster Carr on the pipe to block, and I found that sizing and softness were issues - cut one trying to install it.
