Do you know how old the pump is? How many miles are on the car? If you don't know, and the car has more than 150k on it, swap out the pump.
A colleague at work has a Ford F150 pickup and he had similar symptoms to yours. He replaced the fuel pump and had the same symptoms. It turned out the new pump he bought was bad!
There are posts on this board about using an oscilloscope to look at the power at the pump. If it's erratic or has huge amplitude it's pointing toward a bad pump. You may want to try that first as new pumps run upwards of $300. You can take apart the pump module and ONLY replace the pump itself and then it's $70 or so.
