As you probably gathered from the other responses, there is certainly something wrong, and you will need to do some testing to determine what. The good and the bad of this warning light is that it is "old school" analog. This is why it can vary in its brightness. ALWAYS suspect the battery first, even though almost new - it's the cheapest and easiest thing to fix, and if it's bad the other fixing will be wasted.
You are fortunate to have a 2001, because you can buy just the brush and regulator assembly inexpensively if you choose. This means that after your checking, IF the problem is the alternator AND if it is brushes/regulator, they can be DIY replaced for about $35 to $40 (Bosch parts). A rebuilt alternator from eEuro is about $210 (Bosch, core extra $80), and a new SAAB one is $345 to $370 from eEuro. I mention all this because some rebuilds are really just "check it, it works, spray it with paint" operations. Given that, I have done several regulator replacements since then I can evaluate the bearings and rest of the alternator myself. A lot will depend on test results and whether you DIY.
Good luck !
