I know different people have different ideas on this, but here is my philosophy on insurance:
"Only insure for situations that you can not afford to pay for out of pocket."
So medical injuries in a car crash: insurance. House burns down: insurance. etc.
I don't insure my 1989 winter beater for collision damage I cause to it because I'd never get anything much back anyway and my premiums would go up for little benefit. Would be flushing money down the toilet.
I also use a higher deductible, recognizing that I take this approach. If the item is fairly cheap anyway, the deductible is going to wipe out much of the benefit of the claim.
So I think your approach of going to the junk yard for a window is good. Just before buying, confirm that the shape of the glass (tint, etc also) has not changed at all for the car you have vs the car in the yard. There can be subtle parts changes year to year, and you are looking at cars spanning a MCE. If you want the right year, there are search engines to find car parts across the country. I have not done this repair so I can't comment on the degree of difficulty other than I doubt it would be a huge step beyond green rollers... most of the effort is usually just getting the door apart in the first place, but there can be tricks. I've only done this stuff on the older cars (though I do have a green roller coming due on the 9-5!).
good luck!
