1999 Saab 9-5 SE Sportwagon Posted by billherbst [Email] (#2137) [Profile/Gallery] (more from billherbst) on Wed, 29 Mar 2017 16:25:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I left a post about this problem two weeks ago and got lots of good replies, but now I’m getting desperate, so I’ll try one more new post.
My 1999 Saab 9-5 SE V6 Sportwagon, bought used in 2005, has been the best car I’ve ever owned. Sure, it’s 18 years old, but it has only 99,000 miles. My total cost for everything over the past 12 years — purchase price, insurance, fees, gas, repairs — is less than $24,000, which is great. The only significant repairs were replacing a thermostat and throttle body in 2012, and new tires in January of this year.
In mid-March, I drove my 9-5 Wagon 70 miles over the coastal mountains, and it was perfect. After one hour in a parking lot, I came back, started it up, and instantly knew that something was very wrong.
Symptoms: rough idle (never before), stuttering and hesitation in 1st gear, and significant vibration at 40mph and faster (in 4th gear overdrive) felt in the driver’s seat and steering column.
I took it to my car guys (not Saab experts, but knowledgeable about cars) and swapped out the DICs for two used ones I’d purchased in 2006, since 1999 9-5s weren’t included in the 2005 DIC recall. No improvement. Since those spare DICs were the original version recalled (TK4.4), I bought two of the revised, more robust version (TK4.6), and had them put in, along with a new set of NKG V-power spark plugs. Still no improvement.
My question is: Other than direct ignition cassettes and spark plugs, what are other likely culprits that might instantaneously fail (rather than progressively fail, such as engine mounts or transmission) and cause these problems?
Throttle body?
CPS (crankshaft position sensor)?
Leaking vacuum hose?
Fuel injector?
ECU (electronic control unit)?
I don’t want to start replacing parts at random on an 18 year-old car, even one I like. But I’d also hate to trade in my beloved Saab just because no one can diagnose the cause of the problem.
