Yes, re the tire sizes for winter/summer swap: 235-45R17 to 215-55R16 pair well. I'm doing the other good pairing: 225-45R17 to 205-55R16. The 205's are a little narrower so a bit better in winter in principle.
Yeah, DWS was not stock... The older cars I think had Pirelli all seasons stock on the non-aeros... they were pretty mediocre. I'm running Bridgestone RE970's on the car in summer now and they seem pretty much optimal for my objectives: fantastic in the wet, good cornering and general performance, don't wear too fast (at least compared to the Michelin Pilot Super Sports I had prior - tire wear is fairly low on my list)... I got about 3 years out of this set of RE970's and will probably get them again if I can. They are all season, but not really also - basically only benefit is that they clear well and can handle cold temperatures ok... they are not any good on icy surfaces (even slippery hardpacked snow is bad).
good luck!
