There are split spacers available... discussed somewhere in the bb. I will look.
I'm surprised you had difficulty removing the top nut on the shock. Are they OEM shocks or another brand? I had old OEM shocks and we live in the rust belt. Easy to remove. iirc it's a hex on top, so I put a rachet on the top, and a wrench on the nut, rested the ratchet handle against the floor and ratcheted using the wrench... I did clean the threads and soaked in liquid wrench overnight prior. This was actually the easiest part of the job!
You could also slice the nut with a dremel.
probably it is worth putting on new shock anyway unless the old ones were pretty new.
I put bilstein tourings on a c900 and they are good value.
