I'm not sure that I fully understand what you mean. If there is a bit of sloppiness or hysteresis in the steering, you may have somewhat worn tie rod ends or other joints in the assembly. If you notice it get worse over time, that would be good to look into.
In terms of shocks, I put Koni Sports on our 2004 9-5 and it made a big difference in how the car handled over bumps in the road vs the worn out sachs. That was at about 100k.
Also the type of tires (in addition to the size) does make a difference. Some tires just have more flexible sidewalls than others.
