The manufacturer cannot safely stuff a significantly more powerful engine in a car without upgrading the other critical components - brakes, clutch, suspension, tires, cooling system, exhaust system..... Without upgrading these to Aero levels, the car becomes less safe and less durable, both of which are anathema to Saab.
Plus, there are a lot of folks who would be either uncomfortable or unsafe in a car with Aero performance. The average age of Saab buyers is about 49 - can you imagine a gray haired senior with slowing reflexes and failing eyes in this car? I can, and it hurts just to think about.
BTW, the HOT engine has a number of expensive high-performance internal upgrades over the LPT, as well as a higher quality turbo, resulting in a more costly engine package. I disagree that the LPT is 99% of the HOT - I suspect it is quite a bit less than that.
You can always dream, but don't hold your breath on this one.
If I were dreaming, I would see a "base" 9-5 Aero Wagon in stripped form, with minimal (heavy and expensive) luxury features. Personally, I don't want or need leather, sunroof, ventilated seats, and (most of) the other pricey gee-gaws. I am still trying to get over the fact that I can order a car without a sunroof....as a $0 "upgrade". Shouldn't they be giving me a $750 credit on this?
