With a clean and proper running engine, the cat could be in for the life of the car but usually when you start to reach 150 to 200K you are on borrowed time and as the cat gets more and more used, the lesser it can take of any disturbances like a failed O2 sensor or coolant contamination and such.
But as in Saab's case, it could fail at 5K, 10K or at any miles when the IDM suddenly dies at high speed removing the spark but keep pumping gasoline into the glowing hot front cat and it have a melt down.
It's funny now how people are introducing the same problem Saab was battling with the 99-2000 model with cat melt down due to failing IDM's just to save a few bucks.
The Chinese made ones are a hit and miss at best and we start to see cat melt downs again when they fail at high speed.
