I personally feel cup holders are a North American thing. My c900's have 2 cup holders, both located in the back of the glove box door. See image below. The idea was that you would stop the car, open the glove box, and have those 2 little resting spots for your coffee, as one would never drink something while driving a vehicle. That would be unsafe, at least in Sweden! :-P Totally different world here in North America!
The butterfly cup holder is very non-gm, Swedish design imho. It doesn't work with all shapes of container though so I understand your trouble with it.
There is an accessory cup holder that fits in the armrest (you have to lift up the armrest to use it though). It looks like this and is a genuine part generally widely available:
