I contacted cheapabs and they told me that the ESP units in the '04 models with Bosch PN 0 273 004 701 can only be repaired about 50% of the time and that the speedo will come back but the lights stay on and the code in the ABS system latched.

That said it sounds like it makes sense to just replace the ABS unit with one from a recycler / boneyard. The question is: I a have a 0 273 004 701 in my car - can I use PN 0 273 004 514 instead and have it work correctly after recalibration or MUST I have the part number ending in 701?
